Beautiful Design + Easy Navigation + Device Compatibility

Websites not only need to look good, but they need to function well and be easy to follow and understand. They need to be viewable on all mobile phones and tablets and accessible at the touch of potential customers’ fingertips. Take a look at my work, read up on my faq’s, and hopefully we can team up and get your business where it needs to be.

Some features I can put on your website.

Features in yellow are included (if you want them). Features in orange cost a bit extra. Features in turquoise cost several bits extra. Don’t see what you need? I can probably do it, just ask!

FAQ’s and other need-to-knows.

Please read as these can help you decide if I’m the right designer for you.

About me.

Let me be upfront here.

I am not a super-guru developer, but I am a great D E S I G N E R. My background is in Fine Art and Print Design, which means I was trained in foundations and principles primarily pertaining to composition, space, visual heirarchy, and the like. I have a good eye for layout and I care about “the grid”. I have a BFA in Graphic Design and I have taught myself a **ton** on my own time to improve my skills. That background partnered with my coding experience is why I can absolutely get you a sleek, well-functioning website so that your business can be on par with others in its category.

How does your process work?

The very general way it works.

1. I ask you for links to sites you like the design layout and general look of. They don’t have to be sites in your specific industry, they can be any kind of site. If you’re nearby we can grab a coffee and have a chat.

2. You tell me as much as you can about your target audience or customer. Design and visual aesthetic appeal is of course important, but how your site flows and functions in the best possible way for your visitors is equally important.

3. Based on the example links, info about who you’re marketing to, and our initial conversation, I come up with a layout for you to look at about 2 to 3 weeks in (sometimes longer, just depends).

4. I then get your feedback, you let me know if I’ve hit the nail on the head or if I’m completely off (which hasn’t happened yet, knock on wood!) and we go from there. It’s some trial-and-error and really just a lot of me “playing” with layout, mixing and matching fonts and colors and grid options, until I have a complete look that you absolutely love! I may suggest custom icons, I may make you a background pattern based on your logo, I may say “hey, you should really consider bringing in a fourth color”. I try to consider all avenues to make sure we get the most out of your site so it can, in turn, be the most visually awesome experience for your customer.

Limits on you. Yes, you.

I require a LOT of trust.

There may be times when I try to talk my clients out of using a certain font or even a feature, or just something they really want. Should this happen I promise you I will give specific reasons why, and while you might not agree I truly hope you will trust my professional opinion. I always strive to make every client happy, but sometimes you, the client, can be your own worst enemy when it comes to design decisions. I’m confident in my ability to come up with something you like the first or second time around. Of course you know your business best and I depend on the information you give me, but a certain amount of trust in my skills will be necessary to get a good-looking and well-functioning site.

If any of  the following describes you I may not be the right designer for you.

  • You’ve dabbled in web design so you know a bit about the process and “how it works” {There’s only room for one cook in this kitchen 😉 }
  • You’ve put it off and now you need your site done as quickly as possible, like yesterday {Quality takes time, a rush job will not yield the best results}
  • You’re not sure if you see the value in having a website for your business {I’d be too afraid that you wouldn’t respect my time and effort, so let’s just not go down that road together}
  • You saw several sites you absolutely love so you have a long list of things your site must have, but you have to stick to your small budget {I do understand having a small budget, especially in the beginning of a business, but the more you want the more I have to charge, as it’s not fair to me to give you x amount of  features for a disproportionately low price}
  • You’d like a low price on the first project because you promise you’ll be giving me more work {Ummm nope, not falling for that one}
What does a website cost?

It depends.

Of course price varies based on every clients’ needs, but I can tell you it will range anywhere from $1,200 to $5,000+ for the design of your website. Yes, this is a very broad range, but honestly there’s just so many factors that come into play on a case-by-case basis. Anything under my minimum is solely for nonprofits, and I do require proof of status. My prices are a bit lower than other freelancers and certainly lower than a design firm, and the reason for that is I want to stick to the small and medium businesses that need my help. I don’t have my eyes set on doing giant corporate websites or anything like that. I’m interested in earning what I feel my services are worth and what is commensurate with my cost of living, NOT in the maximum amount I can get out of you. Please keep in mind that while I get paid once for building your website you will be continuously earning from it by way of clients, customers, leads, etc.

A website is an investment.

I have 2 different ways to get an estimate if you’re interested!

New Site Quote Estimate Request a Redesign Quote

I want a redesign, shouldn't that be cheaper and faster?

This is a common misconception. Many people think that since a site already exists with text and photos then that will make a redesign job much easier or faster to do. While there are always exceptions to any rule, for the most part this is simply not true. In some cases it actually triples the workload.

Here’s a few reasons for that:

  • If your site isn’t already built in WordPress I have to translate it to a WordPress site. Maybe you have something using Flash that I now need to configure in a different format (because Flash is dead, I do not use it). You could be a blogger on a non-WP platform and now I have to figure out how I’m going to export your hundreds of posts into a WordPress-compatible file for transfer. A number of issues could come up.
  • If your site is already a WordPress site that means it surely has plugins installed. Many could be reliable and commonly used ones. More, though, will be unnecessary, outdated, or worse — sitting there deactivated taking up space and slowing down your site, and whose core files are possibly acting as open doors to hackers. I have to go through everything you or your previous developer installed with a fine-tooth comb, figure out what’s really needed, what’s trustworthy, decipher what the heck some of the more arbitrarily named ones are even controlling on your site, so on and so on.
  • You’ve established great SEO rank, I now have to tiptoe so to speak and make sure I do everything possible not to screw that up. Changing a theme is unpredictable, especially when the former theme uses a page builder or shortcodes and the new theme doesn’t, and vice versa. Maybe your content will have to be tweaked for SEO with the new theme and layout. Almost never does content not need to be reworked when doing a redesign project.

The bottom line is there can be more variables at play with a redesign. Hence, possibly more time and more money.

Do you offer SEO?

All sites come with SEO setup on all pages (individual blog posts not included). Good SEO GREATLY depends on your content, so it has to be pretty exceptional if ranking is very important to you. You may want to consider hiring a professional copywriter if you think writing dynamic content is not your strong suit, and I know a few if you would like a referral. I do not offer monthly SEO maintenance, but for those interested I partner with a few developers for different projects and they are experts in their field.

Do you offer hosting and/or maintenance?

Yes, and yes.

Hosting: I charge $160 per year for hosting and I use SiteGround as my hosting provider. That price includes one (1) .com domain name (it must be available for purchase and must not exceed $19.99/yr) and it’s yearly renewal as well as WordPress Core updates, theme updates, and all plugin updates. Also included are regularly scheduled backups of your site. It DOES NOT include content changes or purchase of more than one domain name.

Maintenance: I charge $240 per year for maintenance of your site. This includes WordPress Core updates, theme updates, and all plugin updates. Also included are regularly scheduled backups of your site, as well as any existing content changes you need throughout the year, such as text or photo updates, product price changes, etc. It DOES NOT include hosting or any domain purchase. Content changes that require new setup or are what I consider to be outside of the original scope of work will be quoted an additional fee.

Hosting + Maintenance: Purchase together and it costs $350 per year, a discount of $50!

Please view this page for some important info pertaining to hosting and maintenance.

Do you put in security measures?

Yes I do.

I do put in free versions of Wordfence and Sucuri, two of the most widely used WordPress security plugins available. For those who would like added security I charge $30 per year for iThemes Security Pro (a steal!).

How I keep costs down.

I use WordPress, which is a CMS (Content Management System). What’s important for you to know about that is it saves me the time of having to write foundation code necessary for a website, and that in turn, saves you money. A benefit of having a WordPress site is that you can manage your content yourself should you want to. It’s quite user-friendly and basic photo and text changes require no knowledge of coding.

I’m a one-gal shop. I’m the only one you will be dealing with. I do all the sketches, designing, coding, customization, everything it takes to get your website up. I don’t have a staff to pay, I don’t have an office space I rent, I own my own software and hardware so I don’t need to tack on fees to cover those types of expenses. The only additional costs aside from the actual designing would be related to domain and hosting fees, any special plugins or software you may need for your business, or printing costs, should your project require it.

How long will it take?

Turnaround time is 5-7 weeks.

That’s because I’m crazy talented and swamped with work! And honestly, you’ll probably take more time than you realize to get me your content and photos. If you’ve been wanting a website or been meaning to redesign your existing one for months or even years, then really, what’s a few more weeks?

Are payment plans available?

Payment plans will be made on an individual basis.

Small Business Focus

Beautifully designed websites at a fraction of the cost that a big design firm will charge you. You’re a start-up, you’re family owned and run, you’re a one-man shop like me. You need a website but you don’t want to go into debt to get one.

A Business Necessity

Every business needs a web presence, even if it’s just for sharing basic information. Nowadays so many people look to buy products or compare services online, whether at home or on their mobile phone or tablet.

Logo Design

In need of a logo? I can help with that too! Your logo is the first thing people will see when they learn about your business. It needs to be visually appealing, make sense for the business type, and not look like clip art (sorry clip art fans).

I’ve done quite a few websites now but these are some of my favorites.

Words from my clients.

Working with Leslie to build several WordPress sites has been more than a pleasure. She is talented, capable, willing and flexible ― all of the qualities you want in a website designer. Leslie creates sites that are user-friendly, visually pleasing and also ones that can easily be managed and updated by the operator. I so enjoyed working with Leslie, she is the one I direct friends and associates to use when they are in need of a new website.

Nailed my website without even meeting us! I refer A Girl and Her Mac to everyone needing a good website! Leslie rocks!

Jeremy R.Marshall Graphix

Thank goodness for Leslie @ A Girl And Her Mac. I am a small business owner, that loves working with other small business owners. My website had been idle for almost a year and a half. I was getting desperate to find someone accountable, creative, affordable and efficient. Leslie is super on top of her work and really helps “move you along” to get the results needed. I was impressed by how eager she was to complete and exceed expectations set for the website. She does most of her work through email and phone calls beforehand, which is super convenient for any busy business owner!  After all that was said and done, Leslie assured me of her knowledge for the industry and I even moved over my hosting responsibilities to her. Thank you Leslie for your work, my clients are already raving about how easy it is to make an appointment online now!

LeslieAbout A Girl and Her Mac

I’m a web designer based in the great state of Tejas (Spanglish for Texas) and I focus on helping individuals, small to medium-sized businesses, and nonprofits get great websites. Many small business owners resort to using free site builders because of their lack of funds. The end result is usually ugly and unorganized. I work with their budgets and offer payment plans so they can have another option. agirlandhermac@gmail.com
